REMEMBERING
BROTHER KEVIN FORBES
On March 12th, Local 980 lost one of its most dedicated servants
when former Business Manager Kevin Wayne Forbes passed away.
He was 46 years old.
Brother Forbes was initiated into the Local Union October
9th, 1985 while working for various signitory contractors.
Business Manager Bobby Myers asked Forbes to work with him
as Field Representative because of his obvious interest in
the affairs of Local 980.
He served in this capacity until November 2001 when he became
Business Manager when Myers was chosen to represent the Mid-Atlantic
Region as an International Representative. They continued
to work closely together on matter of importance to 980 members.
In August 2005, Brother Forbes suffered a stroke which preventated
him from fulfilling his duties as Business Manager. The Local's
Executive Board, with Forbes participating, installed Bobby
Myers back into the office he had held previously.
Brother Forbes suffered a massive heart attack on March 5th
and clung to life for a week thereafter. Says Myers, "
Kevin will be remebered for his genuine love of Local 980
and each of our fellow members. He was a loyal friend and
Brother to me and I am going to miss him."
Brother Kevin is survived by his wife Bonnie; daughter Tammy;
son Harold Ray and special little buddy Gavin Duncan. |

COUNCIL
OFFICES MOVED
May 9, 2005 - During the late winter and early spring of 2005,
big changes began taking place at the Council. With a sale
pending on the Council property in Williamsburg, the Board
faced a challenge and dealt with it directly.
Three of the affiliated locals, 572, 388, and 307, moved into
a suite of offices in Norfolk sharing costs and sparing expenses.
The main Council offices were moved to Roanoke.
Administrative tasks were then shifted from the Council to
the locals. This was a burden for the locals but the challenge
was met too.
The end result of all these changes will be a Council that
is better off financially, leaner, meaner and more capable
of responding to the needs of our members and others who desire
to become a part of our organization.
If you have questions or concerns about this, please contact
one of the local union Business Managers or the Council Business
Manager, Bobby Myers. |
COUNCIL MOURNS
DEATH OF LOCAL 572 BUSINESS MANAGER LAREST HILL
Dec. 30, 2004 - With the most profound and deepest sadness
the Virginia/North Carolina Laborers' District Council remembers
Larest Hill upon his passing. Larry was a devoted leader to
the members of Local 572 and loyal to his Council and the
Laborers' International Union. For over a year Larry had battled
ill health often handling grievances from his hospital bed.
To those of us privileged to know him, he was an inspiration.
He will be missed for his dedicated work ethic and for his
smile and warmth .Goodbye to the Thin Man. RHM |
